Recap of Maui Cycling Camps …

… with Ryder Hesjedal, Christian Vande Velde, and Tyler Farrar

Maui Cycling Camp ride...Just got finished with an amazing week of cycling with the first edition of the Maui Cycling Camps. This year Ryder Hesjedal,Christian Vande Velde, and Tyler Farrar were the guest pros. We had nine clients attend this year and all of them had and amazing week of riding.

One of our first rides was the West Maui loop where we stopped in Kahakuloa at Loraine’s Snack Stand and refueled with shaved ice. (check out the photo of the Garmin boys enjoying there treat). We had one water day during the week that we spent with Big Wave surfer Dave Kalama. We did stand up paddle surf and four man outrigger canoe. (photo of Dave Kalama, Ryder, Christian, and Tyler) Seamus McGrath doing a bit of standup (photo).

When the riding was over the recovery would start with a massage, and I was double lucky one afternoon. (see photo) It was awesome! You can check out photos and videos at the web site www.mauicyclingcamps.com.

We also had James Marsden the actor that played Cyclops in the X-Men movies at the camp for a few days (photo with me). Really cool guy and hope to ride with him again in the near future.

I am currently reading Laird Hamilton’s new book, “The Wave”, by Susan Casey. Laird gave it to me recently. It’s a great read especially if your a water person. You can pick one up online at Anthony’s Coffee here in Paia. Here’s their link: Laird’s Book at Anthony’s Coffee. Read the rest of this entry »

Antonio Flecha, Dec. 18th & Maui Cycling Camps

Donnie here. A quick update from Maui.

I wanted to share this story because it really hits home with regard to how great a place Maui is to ride and an even greater place to meet some of the coolest people around.

So here goes. I recently rode bicycles with one of the top road racers in the pro peloton on November 3. His name is Juan Antonio Flecha from the Sky Cycling team. (photos attached) Really cool guy! He traveled to Maui for wind surfing and discovered how good the riding is here.
I set him up on one of my Litespeed bikes and we rode about for three hours. He loved it and plans to return next winter with his own bike to train in the off season.

Francisco Goya (bottom photo) former wind surf wave riding world champion also joined Flecha and I for the ride.

I feel fortunate to be able to meet and cycle with lots of the amazing people that come here to visit Maui. Doesn’t matter their background or profession, we all share the same passion to ride the bike. So here’s a Mahalo to all my clients that make these rides amazing. I relish and look forward to all of them.
