We held a new cycling event for Maui last week. It was a downhill coasting race, that started in Keokea and raced down towards Ulupalakua Ranch. The distance was just shy of two miles. Everyone got to pedal for a 100 meters then had to coast the rest of the route to the finish line.

Speeds reached just over 40 miles per hour and the winning time was done by Rick Jacobson with 3:01. After everyone was done the coasting race we did a return trip with an uphill time trial. A bit harder, but the times were pretty fast. The winner was Matt Watson with a time of 7:15. Both winners received a cup of coffee from Grandma’s Coffee shop and a pat on the back from me.

Maui Cyclery will be hosting two other events this month. A time trial on March 13, and road ride on March 27. The time trial race will start in Paia on Baldwin Avenue and finish in Makawao Town. It’s a seven mile up hill coarse with 1700′ of elevation gain. One minute start increments between racers. Start time is 7:00am.

A new product I am getting ready to try is called the Agility Guard. It’s a mouth guard that you wear when your training or competing in most sports and activities. It is suppose to improve your range of motion, flexibility, and strength. My local Maui dentist Barkley Bastian introduced it to me to the product. He does the fittings and has the product made.

We spent two hours doing the set up. It’s a very technical analysis of your jaw and teeth alignment. (check out photo) They took five different molds of my teeth and we tested me with the different one in place. Each one showed different results in my strength and reactions to certain muscle tests. I should have the guard sometime this week and will give everyone feed back on how it works for me. You can check it out on line at www.agilityguard.com. Starting to work on Cycle to the Sun bike race for this year. I am now looking for sponsors and If anyone would is interested or knows a company I should contact let me know. The race will be held on August 20th and registration will open on April 15.
