Cycle to the Sun 2012 a Smashing Success
I wanted to say thanks to everyone who participated in the Cycle to the Sun race on August 25th. This is the third year in a row where we reached the race field limit of 200.
The event went really great and we had 160 who finished in the 6.5 hour time limit. It was a bit windy this year from the start. The times were a little slower because of the wind.
- The overall winner was Takayuk Naganuma from Japan with a time of 2:54:32.
- The top overall woman was Trina Van Dyck from Canada with a time of 3:26:50.
- Three of Maui’s fastest guys were all within the top 20. Forrest Treadwell 12th, Pete Solomon 16th, and Jeff Soulier 19th.
- Fastest local woman was Kris Darrah.
The visibility from the summit was some of the best I’ve ever seen. You can check out the photos at www.tadcraigphotography.com. Thanks to all my sponsors, volunteers, and Maui Cyclery staff. Most of all thanks to my wife Mischelle and my kids Jacques, Kainoa, and Freya. They all helped me make this a successful race.
Next year there will be a date change do to the request of the National Park Service. We are looking at having the race on Saturday, June 29th 2013. This date will be confirmed in the next week.
My next event will be a Mountain bike rally on October 6th. It should be a fun event for the whole family.
Poker Run Mountain Bike Rally – October 6th
$500 cash prize for Best Hand! A fun event where bike riders collect playing cards for completing laps around the course, and the rider with the best 5 card poker hand at the end wins. All levels of riders welcome. The 4-mile course is a mix of single-track, dirt roads and obstacles.
BYO Barbecue afterwards. We’ll supply the grill, snacks, drinks and music. Entrance next to Veterans Cemetery on Baldwin Ave below Makawao.
Thanks again for an amazing race you and your volunteers put on last weekend! Definitely a “must do” event for any cycling enthusiast – I can’t imagine too many races in the world quite like it!

I wanted to thank you, your staff and your volunteers for the huge amount of time it took to coordinate the Race, support the riders and clean up afterwards. My friends from Tradewind Cycling and Cambio-Core were first timers like me so I decided to tag along. More guts than brains as my mother would say. Well now that it’s over, I’m glad I did it.
A big thank you to Nathan for helping my friend fit his rental bike. And a special thank you to Rob for his kind words of encouragement for this newbie and support along the course. And to Martin for making sure us slow guys in the back were safe and for blasting his great country and Neil Diamond music to make me smile. These two guys magically pulled me up that hill with their caring especially at the end when I wanted to give up.
And last, I don’t know who to thank because I wasn’t expecting to see my name or my time posted since I came in well after the cutoff and wasn’t wearing my number anymore. I just heard a woman’s voice calling out for my number as I passed through the gate at the bottom of the parking lot. So, please – please thank her for me for caring. My friends all congratulated me as my finish was in print and “official.” You even gave me special recognition on your website as the last female finisher. How cool is that!
Mahalo Donnie! I’ll be proudly pedaling around Oahu in my 2012 Cycle to the Sun jersey. I’ll be smiling and thinking about you and the boys and the great experience we all shared.
Sincerely, Lynn Wong
