2014 Cycle to the Sun
The summer has been really busy here in Maui. The “Cycle to the Sun” race went really well. The top four riders were from Hawaii, and there times were all under three hours. The overall winner was Max Lafortune from the Big Island in a time of 2:47:43, and Sheila Croft from Seattle won the women’s race with a time of 3:22:18.
It was the best weather conditions I have ever experienced at the summit. Sunny, no wind, and in the 70’s all day. The after party also went well. Maui Brewing Company had the beer flowing and Flatbread was cooking pizzas on the grill till everyone got there fill. Next year’s race will be Saturday, June 27th, 2015.
Las Vegas Interbike Trade Show
I recently got back from the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas. It’s one of the largest bicycle industry trade shows in the world. Wanted to share some of what I saw. There is some really cool new bikes and gear for 2015. The company KTM that is known for making motorcycles is now building and selling road and mountain bikes. Felt Bicycles has a pedal assist electric mountain bike. I test rode this bike in the dirt at the Outdoor Demo. I had a smile on my face the whole time I was riding. I hope to have one at the shop a few months for customers to test ride.
New Disc Brakes
Scott, Felt, Orbea, and Litespeed all debuted disc brake road bikes. All of these guys are making some amazing bikes with Shimano’s hydraulic disc brakes. Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo are making all their new drive trains in 11 speeds now. And they are all making 30 and 32 tooth cassettes for us old guys to get up the hills better.
New Electric Shifting
Shimano is producing a new electric mountain bike shifting system called “Switch Shift Di2” that will be coming on many top of the line bikes. Rocky Mountain bikes will have this system on their Element 999, and Thunderbolt 799.
My next organized bike ride will be here in Maui on December 20th at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store. It will be a 9am start time. 40-mile ride with about 3,500′ of climbing. Lunch will be provided afterward by the Ulupalakua Ranch Store. Lots of great prizes and swag for all the riders.
One Last Note
I will be hosting a cycling camp with Alex Stieda February 21-28 and we will be limited to 16 clients. To get more information Click Here »
